The myth of the wolf Fenris and the god Tyr who sacrificed his hand to be able to chain him is among the most famous of Norse mythology.
In the myth, Fenris, a giant wolf born son of the god Loki, was born under a prophecy that wanted him to be the bearer of great misfortunes for the gods.
It was for this reason that the Æsir decided to chain him and, unable to beat his strength, they had to deceive him.
“I don’t want to be tied up with this ribbon, but instead of defying my courage, some of you rather put your hand in my mouth as a pledge that this is all done in good faith.”
Nobody wanted to lose their hand until Týr lifted his right hand and put it in the good luck of the wolf. As the wolf began to kick, the strip hardened and the harder he pulled, the tighter the ribbon tightened. Then everyone laughed except Týr: he had lost his hand.
