The elder Fuþark (so called from the phonemes of the first six runes: F, U, Þ, A, R and K) consists of 24 runes, often divided into three groups or aett of 8 runes each.
This arrangement is handed down to us by several finds, the oldest of which is the Kylver stone, which was found during the excavation of a cemetery near a farm in Kylver, Stånga, on the island of Gotland in 1903, the dating of which, 400 AD, is based on the archaeological dating of the tombs.
The stone was a flat limestone used to seal a tomb and the runic inscription was written on the underside, and therefore could not be read from above but only from the inside.
