I designed this project based on the Mammen style, which developed between 950 and 1030 AD and is becoming widely popular throughout Scandinavia and the British Isles.
The peculiarity of this artistic period is the influence of the artistic traditions of continental Europe and Christian iconography, which allows this style to develop in a more descriptive way to our eyes, introducing a large amount of recognizable subjects.
The animals of the Mammen style are a more elaborate and more naturalistic evolution of the previous styles, here we find birds, dragons, snakes, masks and the introduction of more plant elements and the “Great Beast”, which became one of the most influential and used subjects throughout the rest of the Viking Age.
To design this in particular I was inspired by the Cammin and Bamberg chests, where various animals seem to have the function of “guardians” to a large mask.
It has been printed on quality canvas, this makes it durable and allows it to be displayed even without a frame.
