Many are fascinated by runes and I am often asked how I use them in my work.
For this project I used real magic formulas engraved on a gold pendant found in Scania, in southern Sweden.
It seems that this type of amulets was used to indicate some kind of connection with the supernatural or the divine.
"Laþu, laukaz, gakaz, alu"
I chose these formulas according to the main subject of the tattoo, the hammer of the god Thor, and based on the person who will wear it on his skin.
The term "gakaz" is an imitative word associated with the cuckoo, derived from an imitation of the sound that the bird makes. It is likely, given the other imitative parallels, that in this case it is used in reference to a battle cry.
The term "laukaz" is ambiguous, it could indicate that the pendant is an amulet of fertility or love, and that the votive terms "laþu" and "alu" are just generic spell words but, relating it to "gakaz", indicates probably the power, making the amulet a powerful warrior spell.
